Empowering Communities Through Awareness & Action

October 2025 was a month filled with impactful initiatives by DAWN Trust, focusing on child protection, health, empowerment, disaster preparedness, and community welfare. Here’s a snapshot of the key highlights from this inspiring month.

October 2025 - Plastic Bottle Usage & Solid Waste Study

DAWN Trust conducted a rapid assessment in Perambalur Municipality to understand rising plastic pollution, especially from single-use PET drinking water bottles. The study covered seven TASMAC outlets and nearby residential and commercial areas, using surveys, field observations, and municipal waste record reviews.

Key Findings

TASMAC outlets sell 200–250 bottles daily, generating nearly 52,000 bottles per month. Around 80% of these bottles are thrown in open spaces such as roads, drains, and vacant lands due to the absence of proper collection bins. Only 35–40% of households practice waste segregation, and improper dumping by vendors and families continues to contribute to environmental pollution. Although recyclable plastic is sent to cement factories in Ariyalur, PET bottles remain largely unmanaged.

DAWN Trust Initiatives

DAWN Trust organised awareness campaigns, eco-brick training sessions, and youth clean-up drives. Findings were shared with municipal authorities to strengthen plastic segregation and improve waste handling practices.

Recommendations

Install labelled plastic bins in public spaces, promote eco-brick making in schools and SHGs, enforce penalties for open dumping, and conduct regular clean-up activities with youth volunteers.

Together, let us work towards a cleaner and plastic-free Perambalur.
